Background
Sussex County Makerspace, Inc. (SCMI) is a New Jersey nonprofit corporation organized as a technical educational resource for Sussex County school STEM programs. From the start, a primary goal of the SCMI founders has been the promotion of interest in science and technology to elementary, middle school and high school aged students in the county, especially through hands-on learning. This goal has recently been reinforced, as NJ standardized tests indicate that only a low percentage of elementary and middle school students now exhibit basic science knowledge. Our intent has been, and remains, to provide exposure to and participation in the FIRSTⓒ Foundation (www.FIRSTinspires.org) hands-on robotic competitions and related or similar activities as the initial stage of our nonprofit corporate development. As we grow, our aim is to add a community makerspace which provides tools and resources for teachers, students, and members of the public to be able to design, and then create their own independent projects.
